23nd Annual Santa Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival
From personal experience, we here at Smooth Jazz Notes can tell you that this is one of the most incredible experiences we have ever had in our lives. We had a wonderful time on Smooth Jazz Island! The quaint, compact town of Avalon is the perfect getaway with its golf carts and mid century feel. The concerts are within walking distance, except the Thursday night Wrigley Ranch escapade, and transportation is provided in 1950s era buses. The restaurants are moderately priced and several Von's (Safeway's) are located in town. If you want to get away for a couple of days, this is a five-star event, don't miss it!

26 miles across the ocean from Los Angeles, California to paradise! Catalina Island is a must on everyone's list and the JazzTrax Festival is one of the premier festivals in the world. Start your long weekend on Thursday night with Unplugged at Wrigley Ranch. The winding trip up to the ranch in an old bus from the 1950's is an adventure and the barbeque dinner is a good crescendo. Find a seat on a hay bale and enjoy an intimate concert under the stars. Relax on Friday and explore Avalon (you will definitely want to do this). A quaint seaport village, centering around the bay and the casino. The hotels date back to the first half of the last century and golf carts are the main mode of transportation. The pace is slow, although service at the plentiful restaurants is quick. Food is reasonably prices and every type of restaurant is available, all within walking distance. Saturday starts off at noon with concerts and progresses through the day with a break for dinner. Party at Descanso Beach after the evening show, but don't stay up too late as Sunday is another full day!

Comments from the artists....
Mindi Abair: "Catalina Island is one of my favorite places on the planet to play ...and just to hang out! I always schedule days just to hang and enjoy when we play there. Where else can you see Buffalo on your way to your show? And see them during your show as well? Our acoustic night was perfect. Buffalo stew, a little wine, a bunch of hay bales to sit on, and stars up in the sky...what more can you ask for? (It worked well for my title track "Stars"!) I'm looking forward to bringing the whole band back this Friday. It'll be a big party up there in the Casino Ballroom."
Jessy J: I had the honor of performing all 3 weekends at the Catalina Jazztrax Music festival in Oct 2008, and we had the time of our lives! Catalina Island has always had a very special place in my heart. It was the first place that I was introduced to "Commercial Jazz"!! When I was in Junior High my Mother and I traveled to the Island to see the Jazztrax fest and we heard Dave Koz, Rick Braun and all the rest of the guys!!! It was at that moment that I realized that music didn't have to be "all serious- all the time". Sure there are still moments of discipline like, practicing, writing, and arranging but there is also the extremely fun side of performing on stage and entertaining the crowd...

I would like to thank Art Good for creating such a beautiful atmosphere and for his great encouragement. He was the first promoter that gave me a chance to perform a major show- even before I even had a record deal in 2006!!!

Stewart Coxhead (Manager of Acoustic Alchemy) "Its a real pain to get there - the room often sounds like a bowling alley - organization- ally its runs on the  "island manama " principle and yet year after year after year the omnipresent Art Good pulls together one of the genuinely classic  Jazz Festivals in the whole wide world. For some reason the Avalon Ballroom, the music fans and Acoustic Alchemy all seem to worship at the same altar. We have headlined there many times since we played the second festival and each time holds really special memories for myself and the Band. The Catalina Island Jazz Festival for location, atmosphere and great audiences is just about as "Art" Good as it gets!"
